MEPC Releases Report: Five Threats to Mississippi’s Tax System

Mississippi lacks the resources needed to support top-notch schools, good roads, and an accessible health care system. Recently, lawmakers have debated tax cuts that would have made it even more difficult to invest in these things, which are critical to our economy and future. Although these tax cuts were ultimately rejected, our tax system is facing other challenges that will undermine growth.
The Mississippi Economic Policy Center released a report today, 5 Threats to Mississippi’s Tax System, that outlines five flaws in the state’s tax structure that are threatening our ability to invest in economic growth. Income inequality, two changes in consumer buying patterns, an aging population, and corporate tax dodging are all making it difficult for Mississippi to raise the resources needed to move the state forward.
