Policy Does Matter

Recently, the MEPC team had an opportunity to discuss “why” we do our work. For many, we are known as the organization that conducts independent research on public policy issues affecting working Mississippians. That is “what” we do; however, the collective “why” of our work is a deepened commitment to help build an inclusive Mississippi where all Mississippians have an opportunity to provide for and support their families. Our work is driven by our passion and desire to provide thoughtful analysis and policy recommendations that support our “why”.

There has been much debate on existing challenges and potential opportunities to implement policy that will provide families across this state with the tools necessary to be self-sufficient. We know that many Mississippi families are struggling financially and that these families pay more of their income in state and local taxes than wealthy Mississippians. We also know that public education in Mississippi has been underfunded by $1.5 billion since 2008. In addition, many Mississippians are still faced with the barrier of not getting healthcare due to a lack of health insurance.

As the MEPC team continues to use data as a tool in informing public policy, we will continue to be driven by the “why”. Addressing the problems that exist in our state requires thoughtful, systematic policies that are grounded in data and developed with the purpose of helping to shape an inclusive Mississippi.

Ultimately, policy does matter.
