Statement in response to action taken at the Mississippi Legislative Special Session
June 29th, 2016
“Today’s actions by the Mississippi Legislature only solve a short term problem. While the state legislature addressed the current budget shortfall, the state’s fiscal health remains threatened with slow economic growth and future tax cuts that will mostly benefit corporations and the wealthy. Meanwhile, each day hard working Mississippians experience the real and devastating effects of the state’s budget crisis including underfunded schools, fewer inspectors for childcare facilities and reduced mental health services, just to name a few. Instead of a tax system that only works for a few, the state should focus on investing in the things that will support all Mississippians and grow the state’s economy like strong schools, affordable college, and health care.”
